Lion Army
In the Kruger National Park there is a hunting force that rivals anything else in Africa – a lion pride, 28 members strong! Despite the females’ hunting prowess, nine adolescent males dominate every kill. Bigger and stronger, they bully their way to the best spots on the carcass. With the pride’s two powerful adult males away on patrol, the unruly youngsters are running riot. Fed up with youngsters eight strong lionesses split from the mega-pride. Food pressure mounts. The remaining females struggle to cater for their sons’ growing demands. Unfocused, uncoordinated and ineffective hunters, the youngsters cause more and more problems. Then, during a hippo hunt, a lioness is severely injured. The other adult females call to the pride males for help. As the head of the family it’s their duty to return to protect the females. During a heated food fight, the males drive the worst three juvenile offenders from the pride forever. Will the remaining youngsters learn from this life lesson and become part of the pride or will they too need to be disciplined?

The Last Lioness
A lone lioness wanders the Liuwa Plain. She roars, calling out for mates, other prides, anyone. There is no answer, there hasn’t been for years. Her name is Lady Liuwa, and she alone survived the scourge of poaching and prey shortage that wiped out lions in Liuwa Plain. For five years wildlife cameraman Herbert Brauer watched her lonely life unfold through his lens, until gradually the lonely lioness began to reach out to him for companionship. An extraordinary relationship blossomed between them, but despite Herbert’s uncanny connection with the lioness, he realised that she needed the company of her own kind. Finally, in May of 2009, plans to reintroduce two male lions to Liuwa came to fruition. For the first time in more than five years, Lady Liuwa heard the call of her own kind, and her desperate isolation ended at last.
